Shutout, Shootout, Shoutout in Joplin

The article below was written by Nelson Morgan of Waynesville Athletic Gazette.

TIGERS: 64
JOPLIN HIGH SCHOOL: 41

Waynesville began Friday's game at Joplin doing the unthinkable.  Then it let the other guys have a little bit of fun.  Finally, it was time to celebrate a three-game sweep on the long trip home when the Varsity Tigers won 64-41 after earlier freshman and junior varsity victories.

The unthinkable was just that.  The Tigers shutout Joplin 23-0 in the first quarter as the visitors could do no wrong and Joplin could do no right.  Waynesville's streak extended to 31-0 until Joplin sank a free throw with 5:32 left in the half.  By halftime the Tigers, despite having Juwan Morgan on the bench with three fouls, led 39-6.

One can imagine what went on in the Joplin locker room at halftime, and when the Tigers backed off a bit defensively in the third quarter, the Eagles had their own mini-streak.  They hit their first seven field goals and a pair of free throws to give their fans something to cheer about.  But it was way too little and way too late by the time Morgan answered the rally with a thunderous dunk for Waynesville.

Waynesville was led by senior guard Rashad Swanson who had perhaps his finest game.  He finished with 22 points and played an excellent  floor game.  Joe Johnson added a dozen as the Tigers stayed first in the Ozark Conference with a 4-0 record.

The game was played in Joplin's beautiful all-new gymnasium, certainly one of the most impressive in southwest Missouri.
