Shootout Win Lifts Tigers Over Willard

WILLARD HIGH: 3

The Tigers' Varsity soccer team seems to want to make sure that its fans get their money's worth.  After edging Battle in one overtime last week, WHS went through two OT periods and a shootout in order to beat host Willard Thursday night, 4-3.

The wild non-league contest saw major swings in the scoring from beginning to end.  But the end was a doozy.  Forced into their first shootout in almost five years, the Tigers seemed to calmly gather themselves together and approach the do or die situation in a business-like manner.  After goal keeper Jon Moore had made his second save on four Willard shots, the Tigers led 3-2 and needed one final goal to seal the win.  When junior Caleb Rodriguez stepped up and did just that  the all-business approach ended as the squad leaped  in celebration of its second win.  Riley King, Chase Holden, and Tremayne Watterson also found the back of the net during the shootout.

The Tigers led 1-0 at  halftime when King and Rodriguez won control of the ball at midfield and sent it up to a streaking Holden left of center.  Holden moved to his right and then nestled the shot inside the left post.  When Rodriguez took a ball  from his left and two-touched it into the goal early in the second half it appeared that the Tigers were off and running, but Willard's fine forward Cooper Dunn soon tied the score with a pair of his own.  Then, during a stretch when Waynesville seemed fatigued, the Tigers attempted to clear a Willard cross, but deflected it backwards for an own goal.

That came near the 20 minute mark and heavy Willard pressure continually kept Waynesville on defense.  But the Tigers managed a corner kick with about 6:30 remaining.  Holden placed the ball well and it was knocked around in front of the Willard goal until it rolled towards the right side and senior Austin Bogle buried it for the equalizer.

The Tigers outshot Willard on goal, 14-8 and Moore had six saves prior to the shootout.  Waynesville will makeup its Ozark Conference game with Hillcrest on Monday with  a four o'clock varsity-only game in Springfield.
