For the first time since 2014 the Waynesville Varsity Football team defeated the Kickapoo Chiefs! The week 2 game for the Tigers marked the 2019 home opener, and the Tigers did not disappoint. A close first half saw both teams struggle to find a rhythm on the offensive side. The struck pay dirt on the their 3rd offensive drive of the game, with a 10 yard TD run by SR RB Shen Butler-Lawson. SR Kicker Aaron Choi tacked on the extra point to make the score 7-0 in the 2nd quarter. Kickapoo scored on a quick strike on their next possession, and the score remained tied at 7 going into half time.
The second half was where the Tigers found their groove and never backed off! The Tigers Defense shut down Kickapoo’s offense, holding them scoreless for the second half, while totaling up 6 three and out series, 6 sacks, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery, and holding Kickapoo to 285 total yards of offense. The Tigers Offense also made progress, scoring 23 points in the second half, sparked by A. Choi’s 30 yard field goal in the 3rd quarter. A trio of TD runs in the 4th quarter put the game out of reach. S. Butler-Lawson added a second TD run with a 5 yard scamper, Freshman RB Evander Bradford scored on a resilient 15 yard TD run, and Soph RB Eric Richardson sealed the deal with a 49 yard TD run with just over 3 minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers won in convincing fashion 30-7!
