The Waynesville Tiger Boy's Golf Team began it's season today at Great Life Golf and Fitness in Lebanon, MO. The triangular match included WHS, Lebanon, and School of the Osage.
The weather was more fitting of a polar golf match as the golfers endured high 30's temperatures, drizzling rain, and snow showers. Through it all, Lebanon's varsity came out on top with a team score of 168, School of the Osage finished second with a 196 and WHS came in with a team total of 235.
The Lebanon Junior Varsity also came out on top with a team score of 204, School of the Osage finished second with a 215 and WHS came in with a team total of 266.
I have to say I am quite proud of this very young team. Of the 8 participants, only Junior Wade Howser has more than 1 year of experience. Howser completed his round in 47 strokes, 6 strokes behind meet medalist Lebanon's Aaron Shoemaker who shot a 41. All of the WHS golfer's finished well below their season scoring average which was a very pleasant surprise. I was anticipating only Howser finishing below double par, but all of them did it and that is showing that their hard work in practice is paying off.
The Tigers have 14 golfers this season with 9 of them being Freshmen. Tonight I had two Freshmen playing on Varsity. Freshmen Fred Boone and Kevin Barrett both posted rounds of 62 as they tied for the second lowest score on the team. These two young men really played their hearts out and gained a lot of valuable knowledge for the future. The grit these two showed is the kind of grit all the players showed in extreme weather.
As a first year head coach, I am looking forward to a great season with these young men. It is truly a treat to get an opportunity to coach so many new players and to be part of their development.
