JEFFERSON CITY JAYS - DISTRICT FINAL: 2
Playing in their third district championship game in four years, the Waynesville Lady Tigers harrassed fourth-ranked Jefferson City the entire game before falling 2-1 Tuesday evening at Tiger Stadium. The talented Jays had their hands full with WHS in the first half as the Waynesville back four and goal keeper D'Anna Hasik proved solid while the mids kept feeding a good attack up front. Jeff City finally broke through in the 28th minute when junior wing Eden Hoogveld grounded one just out of Hasik's reach for a 1-0 halftime lead. Jays Coach Eddie Horn had some things to say to his team at the half and the number-one seed played much better ball possession the rest of the way. Waynesville's hopes remained high until Hoogveld found the net again 17 minutes into the second half. The Jays seemed comfortable to sit on their lead from that point, but senior Jessica Schellhase stepped past the last defender and scored from about forty yards out with 47 seconds remaining. The goal reenergized the the Tigers and their fans, but the Jays regained quick possession and time ran out. It was the final game for Tiger seniors Schellhase, Elizabeth Sisson, Erin White, and Megan Morgan; all of whom will play at the collegiate level next year. The Tigers finished the season 9-17. Jeff City won for the 20th time this season and will host a state quarterfinal game next week.
