When you've been shutout five straight times, you have a certain mind set to change things. Pity the poor Moberly girls soccer team which ran right smack into Waynesville's mind set in the opening game of the West Plains Invitational on Friday. Striving to end that scoreless run, the Lady Tigers destroyed Moberly 5-0 in an upset of the fifth seed over the fourth seed. WHS not only managed the shutout, but didn't allow a shot in eighty minutes while blitzing Moberly for 27, 24 of them on goal.
Leading Waynesville's offensive revival was Haley Reckard, with a hat trick. But it was freshman Emma Kersten who put in the eventual winner with a goal in the 17th minute. WHS made that one hold up for a 1-0 halftime lead. Then Reckard scored three times in a five minute period of the second half to open things up. Two of those came off of assists from Taylor Winking. Reckard earned her own assist two minutes later when she found Katelyn Sieber for the final score.
The win moved WHS into Saturday's winners bracket and matchups with strong Harrison, Arkansas and Rolla squads, Waynesville managed to avoid the shutout bug in both, but lost to the Goblins 6-1 and the Bulldogs 4-1. Reckard had her fourth goal of the weekend against Harrison and Emily Anderson scored against Rolla.
