If it had been a shopping trip, the cash register would have been busy ringing up the sales. But it was a soccer game and the Lady Tigers used their recently discovered scoring touch to cash in host West Plains 10-0 on Tuesday evening. WHS out shot the Zizzers 24-1 with 21 shots on goal.
Left Wing Katelyn Sieber tried to start the scoring in the fourth minute on a breakaway run, but her shot went wide right. But Sieber knew she had her defender’s number and came back with a pair of goals in the next four minutes, the second coming off an assist from Taylor Winking. Two minutes later, Winking found herself in the box with her back to the goal. She turned a perfect 180, coming out of it with a shot past the goalkeeper.
West Plains then made an attempt to get back into the game with a pair of direct kicks on its offensive end, but neither were productive. Thus ended West Plains’ attack for the night. But Waynesville was just starting. Haley Reckard scored off an assist from Alexis Willingham and Winking added her second score. Then, Andrea Ramos celebrated her fifteenth birthday by icing the cake in the first half for a 6-0 lead off an assist from Haley Reckard.
In the second half, Reckard scored again off a short touch from Reyna Watterson. The goalkeeper momentarily had the ball, but couldn’t control it and Reckard made sure it found the back of the net. Emily Anderson scored six minutes later and that set up the goal of the game. With 22:33 remaining, defender Lexie Timmons stepped across the mid line to take a direct kick from about 50 yards out. Timmons struck the ball so well it sailed over the goalkeeper’s head and just beneath the crossbar. 9-zip. West Plains then tried its best to avoid the mercy rule and thwarted the Lady Tigers for sixteen minutes. But, with 6:40 remaining, birthday girl Ramos, after icing the cake in the first half, lit the candles. The speedy freshman took the ball on a short breakaway and scored to send everyone home.
WHS now returns home for a challenging three-game home stand to finish the regular season against two ranked teams and one just out of its top-ten. On Friday, Jefferson City, which is ranked 13th in Class 5 will be at Tiger Stadium. On Monday, WHS will close out its Ozark Conference season against first place and Class 3 eighth-ranked Glendale before Tuesday’s finale against Class 2 fourth-ranked Springfield Catholic.
