Tough Schedule Finally Ends For Soccer Girls

SPRINGFIELD CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL: 6

Ask the Lady Tiger soccer players what it’s like to be squished between bookends.  They can tell you.  After opening the season with a loss to Bishop DuBourg, WHS closed out the regular schedule with home losses to Jefferson City, Glendale, and Springfield Catholic.  Nothing unusual about that, you say?  Well, in the final regular season state poll, DuBourg is ranked fourth in Class 2, Jeff City is eighth in Class 4, Glendale is eighth in Class 3 and Catholic is third in Class 2.  How about some headache medicine?

Waynesville fought gallantly in an attempt to end Glendale’s perfect Ozark Conference record, but ultimately fell in overtime, 2-1 on Monday night.  Both the Jeff City and Catholic finals were  6-0 on Friday and Tuesday respectively.

The girls played well defensively against Glendale, thwarting the Falcons on nearly every one of their attacks.  WHS actually took the lead 18 minutes into the second half on a score by Haley Reckard, but Glendale tied it four minutes later and scored the Golden Goal just a minute into the second overtime.  Goalkeeper D’Anna Hasik came up big for WHS with 13 saves to keep the Tigers close.  The Jays and Irish jumped out early and had commanding leads at halftime in both of their games.

Waynesville finished the regular portion of its season with a 7-16-1 record, going 3-6 in the O.C.  Other ranked teams on their schedule included Jefferson City-Helias and Nixa.  Still, WHS has a good shot at doing well in its district tournament next week in Springfield.  The Lady Tigers are seeded  third and will meet Lebanon at six p.m.Monday  at Harrison Stadium.  Lebanon squeaked by Waynesville 1-0 in the opening week of the season.  Should the Lady Tigers move past Lebanon, they will most likely face district host Springfield Central.  The Bulldogs also managed just a 1-0 win over Waynesville a week after the Lebanon defeat.  Regardless of the Jeff City and Catholic scores, WHS has played its best soccer of the season over the past two weeks. With the bookends behind them, the Lady Tigers begin a fresh chapter next Monday.
