When Reyna Watterson slid her shootout attempt past the Lebanon goalkeeper it was cause for a big celebration Monday night as the Lady Tigers upset Lebanon 3-2 at Central’s Harrison Stadium.  The goal, coming after previous scores by Emily Lucit and Taylor Winking, gave WHS a 3-1 advantage after four shootout attempts as Waynesville goalkeeper D’Anna Hasik had saved two of Lebanon’s shots.  Ring it up, the girls play host Central for the district title at six on Wednesday.

Lebanon went up early on a breakaway goal with Lexie Wapelhorst assisting Alyssa Long in the fifth minute, but Lexie Timmons tied the score six minutes later on a thirty-yard direct kick.  The two teams battled to a 1-1 halftime tie.  Waynesville had some big defensive plays early in the second half to thwart the Jackets.  Hasik leaped high to pick off a corner kick attempt and when she slipped with 25 minutes remaining, Timmons raced to clear the ball away from the goal line with a slide tackle.  But Lebanon came right back and Wapelhorst scored on a 180 spin move less than a minute later.

Lebanon then gained control of the game as the Jackets seemed more rested with frequent substitutions.  However, Timmons was injured at the 12:03 mark and the game was halted for about twenty minutes.  Waynesville regained its legs during the break and after players from  both teams surrounded Timmons hand-in-hand, Waynesville went back to business.  Right wing Alexis Willingham, who had a great game, beat her defender on the right side and crossed the ball into the box.  There was a mad scramble for control which screened the Lebanon keeper from taking the ball and when left wing Kaitlyn Sieber saw the ball squirt towards her she found a seam and the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.

Both teams battled for scoring opportunities in the two overtime periods with Lebanon’s defense coming up big and Waynesville goalkeeper Hasik doing likewise.  After 110 minutes of soccer it was time for the Shootout and Watterson’s perfect end to the evening.
