Quarterbacks Varon Martinez and Brady Petry each tossed a trio of touchdown passes, but it was Waynesville's late running attack and defensive play that made the difference in Friday night's 37-26 win over visiting Hillcrest.
Petry threw td passes of 10, 30, and 30 yards, but Hornet receivers repeatedly dropped other throws all night long. Martinez threw less, but his receivers made them count as Nigel Farmer hauled in 15 and 33 yard td's and Reggie Walker caught a five-yarder.
Still, it was a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter that made the final difference. After a HIllcrest intentional grounding call helped Waynesville take possession at the Hornet 44, Walker went in from the 15 at the 6:44 mark. About three minutes later, Zac Melvin made a tackle for loss on a Hornet fourth down at their 40. Willie Parker later went in from the three with the final touchdown.
Time to turn it over to the Tiger defense. Following a Hillcrest touchdown with 2:37 remaining, Jacob Saylor recovered an onside kick, and on the Hornets' final possession, Parker came up with an interception to seal the Tigers' first win of the season.
Place kicker Sam Thompson stepped up big with a 33-yard-field goal in the first quarter and added four extra points in the game. The Tigers travel to Springfield Parkview next Friday.
