Trailing 16-7 nearing halftime, Waynesville twice recovered Parkview fumbles in the Vikings' red zone to keep things close when time ran out. Then, on the third quarter kickoff, Tiger Seth Hedrick took the ball at the goal line, worked his way through the front Parkview defenders, found a seam to the left sideline, and was gone for a 100-yard kickoff return. That made the score 16-14 and the Tigers were off and running to a 42-23 come-from-behind road win Friday night at Kennedy Stadium.
Parkview had dominated the first half, moving the ball at will on 35 plays as the Tigers only ran 21. After falling behind 9-0, the Tigers found the scoreboard late in the first quarter when Reggie Walker took a pitchout and went 81 yards to bring the Waynesville fans to their feet. But Parkview countered with a 78 yard drive of its own to make it 16-7. The Tigers continued to have problems moving the ball, turning it over on a fourth down attempt and a punt, but the defense came up big both times with fumble recoveries by Jason Patrick and Chazden Stribling on bad Viking snaps.
When Parkview finally got the ball back in the third quarter, Waynesville began a blitzing defense that forced three Parkview punts and three more turnovers. On one of those turnovers, in the fourth quarter, Stribling picked up the loose ball at the PHS four yard line and took it in for a score. Earlier, in the third quarter, Varon Martinez threw a 47 yard touchdown pass to Hendrick in a third and sixteen situation and Martinez scampered around left end for a 24-yard t.d. run. The Tigers increased their best scoring effort of the season when Willie Parker ran it in from one yard out to open the fourth quarter. Parkview scored once more, but never really threatened the Tiger lead.
Game officials were tossing flags everywhere in the second half. The Tigers were called for a dozen in the game, totaling 100 yards, and Parkview had ten penalties for 90 yards, plus a late ejection. Parkview's big first half, gave it a 22-9 lead in first downs, but the Tigers offset that with four fumble recoveries and an interception to even their record at two and two. Waynesville's kicking game continued to show improvement as Sam Thompson converted all six of his point-after attempts. Up next, Rolla at home. Be there.
