Camdenton's Nate Paschal nailed a 34-yard field goal with fifteen seconds remaining Friday night and the Lakers nipped Waynesville 21-20 on the winner's field. The loss was Waynesville's third one-point defeat of the season and dropped the Tigers to 3-4 in the Ozark Conference.
For the second week in a row, what seemed to be shaping up as a Tiger victory was hurt by a Waynesville personal foul. Last week, the call went against the Tiger defense and gave Joplin life. At Camdenton, the call went against the offense and negated a first-and-goal opportunity inside the Camdenton one. The drive had begun on the Waynesville 15 late in the third quarter. After earning four first downs to move to the Camdenton 14, Varon Martinez connected with Cedric Williams at the goal line early in the fourth quarter. But the penalty forced the Tigers to start over from the Laker 15 and ultimately miss a 25-yard field goal. Camdenton responded with an 80-yard drive to score. The Lakers' point-after run failed and Waynesville still led 20-18.
WHS failed to advance the ball past its own 44 on the next possession and a short five-yard punt gave Camdenton the ball at the Tiger 49. The Lakers picked up two first downs, but their drive stalled and on fourth down at the Waynesville 17, Paschal kicked the game-winner.
Camdenton took the opening kickoff and followed halfback Josh Martin's lead for a ninety yard drive with Martin ultimately scoring from two yards out. CHS missed its extra point, as it would after all three of its touchdowns. The Tigers responded with a 62 yard drive of their own. After Willie Parker scored on a four yard run, Sam Thompson drilled the kick and Waynesville led 7-6 with 54 seconds left in the first quarter. The Lakers came right back with the help of a long return and regrabbed the lead 12-7 three minutes later. But Thompson stepped up big for the Tigers and field goals of 28 and 27 yards lifted WHS ahead 13-12 at halftime. Both teams traded punts to open the second half, but Martinez broke loose on the Tigers' second possession for a sixty-yard touchdown scamper. Thompson's extra point made it 20-12 and things looked very good at that point. But the penalty, missed field goal, and short punt soon turned things around for the Lakers.
The Tigers had 100 yards more total offense than the Lakers, but Martin's 182 yards on 39 carries kept each of the Laker drives alive. Martinez had 211 yards total offense for Waynesville. Jalen Thomas had 50 yards on seven carries before being hurt. Williams caught five passes for 61 yards. The Tigers will host Glendale on Friday for their 2014 Homecoming. Glendale outlasted Rolla Friday, 72-65. Falcon quarterback Alex Austin was 44 of 72 for 470 yards and nine touchdowns. He rushed for another 180 yards and one score. This is going to be one all Tiger fans will want to see.
