ROUTE 66 SHOOTOUT: 50
Class 5 number 6 Waynesville outlasted Class 4 number 5 St. Joseph Lafayette 57-50 in opening night action of the third annual Route 66 Shootout Friday at Tiger Court. The Tigers led from the outset, but Lafayette always stayed within striking distance and drew within two points on a traditional three-point play midway in the fourth quarter, 45-43. WHS then went on a 8-0 run to advance the score to 53-43. The Fighting Irish showed their resiliency and drew to within 53-50 with 16 seconds remaining. Waynesville went four for four at the line the rest of the way for the thrilling win. Juwan Morgan led the Tigers with a double double; 24 points and ten rebounds. Joe Johnson added 14, most from long distance. WHS will play the Class 5 number 8 Hazelwood Central Hawks to conclude the Shootout at 6:30 today. The five preceeding games will begin at 11:00. The Lady Tigers will face Union at five.
In the other games yesterday, Class 1 number 7 South Iron upset Class 2 number 1 Iberia 65-62 in double overtime, Hartville beat Crocker 69-44, Republic pounded Hazelwood West 57-28, McCluer North defeated Springfield Parkview 50-39, and a very talented St. Louis Christian Academy raced past Hazelwood Central 72-48.
