ROUTE 66 SHOOTOUT: 60
Hazelwood Central made a hot-shooting first quarter stand up in a 60-52 upset of host Waynesville in the Route 66 Shootout Saturday night. The Hawks raced to a 16-8 lead after eight minutes and led the entire game, winning by the same margin. A pair of free throws by Juwan Morgan and a trey by Joe Johnson, brought WHS to within 37-34 early in the fourth quarter, but a five-oh run by Central moved the spread back to eight and the teams just traded baskets the rest of the way. Morgan led the Tigers in scoring with 25 points. Cedric Williams had a team-high 11 rebounds. Both teams went one and one in the Shootout. Waynesville had been ranked sixth in Class 5 and Hazelwood West entered the weekend ranked eighth.
In other boys Shootout games Saturday, Mountain Grove beat St. Louis Carnahan 72-48, St. Louis Christian beat McCluer North 63-56, and Strafford drubbed Carl Junction 69-44.
