It is said that sometimes home cooking can fix anything and that’s just what happened for Waynesville in the 7th place game Saturday afternoon at the Bass Pro Tournament in Springfield. After losing difficult games against strong nationally recognized teams, the Tigers found themselves facing off with Ozark Conference foe Parkview on the final day. And it was a feast for WHS as it followed senior Juwan Morgan and routed the Springfield squad 49-25.
Parkview had faced injury problems in the first two games, as had the Tigers, but while Morgan was ready to go on Saturday, the Vikings were without Connor Ratcliff who sustained a broken foot on Friday.
For the third game in a row, Morgan hit an outside shot to open an early lead for Waynesville and the rest of the Tigers climbed aboard the Juwan train for the rest of the way. Morgan finished with about as good a basketball game as could be expected. He hit 8 of 13 field goals attempts, 4 of 6 three-point attempts and was nearly perfect from the line, going 7 of 8 to finish with 27 points. He pulled down 11 rebounds, three on the offensive end; and added an assist, a steal, and four blocked shots in a full 32 minutes. The only statistical category he did not check off was turnovers, a perfect control game for the Indiana signee.
Coach Chris Pilz used a dozen different players in the game in support of Morgan. Cedric Williams added 8 rebounds and Joe Johnson 10 points and the Tigers had their best shooting game of the tournament.
One of the nation’s best teams, Oak Hill Academy from Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, won the tournament over Wesleyan Christian of High Point, North Carolina.
