A barrage of Hillcrest three-pointers in the first half and a barrage of Waynesville turnovers in the second half combined to help the Lady Hornets to a 61-51 road win on Thursday night. Hillcrest drained seven treys, most on uncontested shots in the first sixteen minutes. Five of those were made by senior Kelsie Cleeton who had twenty by halftime.
Waynesville had scored six straight points to wrap up the first quarter with a 14-13 lead. When Bree Stoddard and Callie Bildner opened the second quarter with quick baskets, Waynesville was up by five. But Hillcrest responded with a 13-0 run of its own and Waynesville trailed 36-26 at the half.
The two teams each scored 25 points in the second half as WHS slowed Cleeton's shooting opportunities, but the Lady Tigers turned the ball over time and again to check their possessions. They did close to within 38-34 at one point, but another Hornet run put the game out of reach. Bildner led Waynesville with 21 and Nina Kizzee added 10. Cleeton led all scorers with 25. Hillcrest moved ahead of WHS in the O.C. with the win.
