Springfield Glendale moved into sole possession of first place in the Ozark Conference soccer race with a 4-1 win Wednesday night at Anderson Field. WHS played well in what was a very close game, but junior forward Bobby Spence scored a hat trick to lead the Falcons' win.
Spence's first goal made it 1-0 at the half, but the Tigers came out of the second half gate strong. Three minutes in, Chase Holden sent a nice through ball past the Falcon defenders and Caleb Rodgriguez was off and running for the game-tying goal on a breakaway. About nine minutes later, Glendale's Sean Perryman scored on a freak shot that caromed off the left post, streaked along the goal line and finally crossed it just inside the right post. Spence then added his second and third scores to put things out of reach.
The Tigers were playing without senior goalkeeper Jon Moore who was out for medical reasons. A trio of Tigers answered the call and Waynesville's defense stepped up to help the younger keepers. As a result, Glendale had only six shots on goal. The Falcons are now 5-0 and the Tigers 5-1 in the O.C.
Waynesville plays in the Kickapoo Tournament this weekend, opening with Greenwood on Friday afternoon.
