The Tiger soccer team claimed first place in the Brown Division of the 24th Annual Kickapoo Chiefs Shootout Saturday afternoon at Pottenger Stadium by shutting out Carthage 2-0. Junior Forward Caleb Rodriguez scored twice in the first half and the Tiger defense weathered a furious Carthage attack in the last ten minutes for the victory.
Rodriguez's goals came in the 13th and 25th minutes, the second off an assist from Chase Holden. Carthage worked hard to control possession in the second half, but the Tiger defense was on its game to turn back the strong effort. Senior goalkeeper Jon Moore, who played in the tournament after getting a medical okay, had one of his finest games. Moore managed three saves as several Carthage shots sailed high. Twice he smothered the ball before a shot could be taken; once by rushing straight out of the box and a second time by disrupting a breakaway. One of his saves came on an explosive dive to his right to preserve the shutout.
The tournament victory raised the Tigers' record to 10-2 on the season. WHS will return to Ozark Conference action with a Monday game at arch-rival Rolla.
