The HIllcrest Hornets probably wish they'd missed the bus for Tuesday night's soccer season opener at Waynesville's Anderson Field. As it turned out, their trip was a short one anyway because the Tigers proved rude hosts by de-stinging the Hornets 10-0 in a game called at halftime.
WHS simply had way too much offense for the young Hornets. Senior Caleb Rodriguez opened his fourth year of varsity play with a four-goal performance, and it was matched by speedy sophomore Daniel Sesay in his first ever appearance in a Tiger uniform. The two forwards scored in bunches. Rodriguez scored 21 seconds into the game and again 33 seconds later. Before a minute was up, it was Rodriguez 2 Hillcrest 0. Rodriguez added a third goal 2:14 later and his last in the game's fifteenth minute. In between his second and third, Joey Cartright found the back of the net in his first varsity start and DJ Kaaihue scored between numbers three and four.
The feeding frenzy paused for the next 12 minutes, but when Sesay finally found the range, he enjoyed it so much he did it again...and again...and again. Once he brought his shots on goal mouth, the Hornets just fell apart. Sesay scored with 12:52 remaining, added his second goal twenty seconds later, his third a minute-ten later and his final goal with six minutes left.; All four were unassisted. Sesay himself had an assist on Rodriguez's second score and Austin Cartright assisted on Kaaihue's.
Goalkeeper Jacob Woodward smothered the only Hillcrest shot on goal late in the game for a shutout. WHS travels to Columbia-Battle on Thursday and returns to host Springfield Central on Friday.
