Waynesville forward Daniel Sesay had plenty of shooting practice Thursday night at Battle High School. Some of his shots went wide left. Some went wide right. A few went high over the crossbar. But all of that practice paid off when he found the far side net for the winning goal with just 11 seconds remaining in the 2-1 victory. The winner was set up on a throw-in as time wound down. The ball was knocked around at the feet of three players and then came out to Sesay. A quick step toward goal put him behind the last defender and he slotted the winner low and between the goalkeeper and the far post.
WHS had trailed most of the game thanks to Battle's speedy forward Omar Hayes. Hayes took a through ball and was wide open for the score in the game's 12th minute. He continued to provide a threat in the first half. First, he made a perfect cross from the left, but no one could catchup with it, and then he almost repeated the earlier goal, but Tiger keeper Jacob Woodward raced out to smother the through ball before Hayes could reach it. Hayes was rendered useless in the second half as Tiger senior Alberto Reyes man-marked him and kept him out of play. Battle did not have a shot on goal in the second half.
Waynesville dominated the second half but couldn't score until the 23:44 mark. After a foul about 35 yards out, Caleb Rodriguez made a touch pass wide to his right where defender Robert Osborn placed a long shot for the tie. Over 23 minutes later Sesay scored the winner. WHS has an important district game against Springfield Central at home on Friday.
