Caleb Rodriguez scored a pair of goals to lead Waynesville to it's first soccer win over Joplin in four years, a 3-2 victory Tuesday night at Anderson Field. The rough and tumble game saw the Tigers whistled for 20 fouls and the Eagles for six fouls and a yellow card. The quality of play disintegrated for both teams as they dealt with the first real hot weather in about two weeks.
Rodriguez scored once in each half, but it was forward sidekick Daniel Sesay that kicked things off for WHS. On a corner kick, Rodriguez attempted a bicycle kick but popped the ball up where it was bumped a second time by a defender. Sesay then caught the ball on the way back down and shoved it in the net to the keeper's left in the 12th minute. Three minutes later Rodriguez scored, but a late goal had Joplin within 2-1 at halftime.
Early in the second half Rodriguez scored the eventual winner when he took a throw-in down the right side of the field, cut past the defender, went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and shoved the ball between him and the near post. It was a beauty. Joplin made it 3-2 later on a penalty kick, but the Tigers hung on to run their record to 2-0 in the Ozark Conference and 3-1 overall. WHS hosts Willard on Thursday.
