Forward Danny Sesay wasn't around when the streak began, but he certainly knew how to keep it going in Tuesday night's 2-1 Ozark Conference win at West Plains. Waynesville entered the game with a 7-game winning streak over the Howell County team. The Zizzers had been outscored 15-0 in the last three of those losses and were a determined bunch to end the streak this year. But they'd never seen Sesay before.
West Plains scored in the 17th minute on a high direct kick off goalkeeper Jacob Woodward's fingers, and they made that stand up at halftime. The Tigers seemed out of sync offensively in the opening half, but began the second 40 minutes with renewed intensity. Just three minutes in, Sesay's running mate, Caleb Rodriguez, beat his defender on the left side and sent a sweet cross to Sesay who deflected the ball perfectly for the equalizer. Rodriguez was hurt on the play and left the game for a time. On his return, the Zizzers man-marked him tightly to deny him possession.
The game rambled on with numerous fouls over the next 36 minutes, but the best scoring opportunity belonged to the hosts. With 9:17 remaining, West Plains countered quickly with a powerful attack that resulted in a solid shot sailing wide right. It appeared the game may go into overtime when Sesay grabbed a loose ball as a defender went down and fired it past the goalkeeper for the win. Clock time? 44 seconds remaining.
The win moved Waynesville to 3-0 in the O.C. and 5-1 overall. The Tigers host Camdenton Thursday at Anderson Field.
