With leading scorer Caleb Rodriguez unable to play because of the injury sustained last week, Waynesville stumbled around trying to find itself against Parkview Monday night. The Vikings recognized a down-team when they saw it and nearly pulled off a giant upset, but Brandon Hofmann and Danny Sesay did what was needed to save the Tigers’ perfect Ozark Conference record in a gasping 4-3 soccer victory at Anderson Field.
Coach Mike Armstrong tried several different combinations up front with Sesay, but no one could pick up the slack until he moved Hofmann up from the back line. The two would provide the tying and winning goals in dramatic fashion.
Parkview dominated the game in its first fifteen minutes, but it was Sesay who would score first in the 20th minute. However, the Vikings tied the score just 54 seconds later. Sesay scored again off a through ball from Hermano Carvalho in the 23rd minute, but Parkview again tied it just before halftime.
The second half was much different with a lot of back and forth. Great shots by DJ Kaaihue and Carvalho were saved by Parkview’s freshman goalkeeper, and things looked bleak when Parkview went ahead at the 13:05 mark. That’s about when Hofmann moved up front. At the 7:51 mark, something happened in front of the Parkview goal. With the clock stopped, officials conferred with one another and with Tiger Coach Armstrong. The final deicison was a red card against a Parkview defender for slapping down a close-in volley shot from Sesay. But it was Hofmann who stepped to the line and tied the score.
With everyone watching the clock and expecting overtime, the Tigers pushed the ball back up front . Hofmann slammed a shot off the young goalkeeper’s hands and Sesay was there for the rebound shot and winning goal with 27 seconds remaining.
The Tigers are now 6-0 in Ozark Conference play; with Class 3, tenth-ranked Glendale on the road Wednesday.
